Revised Application Standards for ITINs Internal Revenue Service

The IRS has updated procedures that affect the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) application process. Taxpayers and their representatives should review these changes, which are further explained in these Frequently Asked Questions, before requesting an ITIN.

The advantage to using Certifying Acceptance Agents (CAAs) is that for primary and secondary applicants (like a spouse), the CAA can certify that your documents are original and make copies to send to the IRS. That way, you won’t have to mail your originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. The IRS has a long list of documents or combinations of documents that can show your status and identity. A current passport would meet all these requirements and is the only document you can submit on its own.

How long does it take to renew an ITIN?

You must have a PTIN if you, for compensation, prepare all or substantially all of any federal tax return or claim for refund. An ITIN is a tax processing number primarily used by specific non-resident and resident aliens, their spouses, and dependents who are ineligible to obtain a Social Security number (SSN) in order to comply with U.S. tax laws. The ITIN enables the IRS to efficiently process tax returns and payments made by these individuals. How long does it take to get an ITIN?

You can also apply through one of the two types of acceptance agents authorized by the IRS. Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual. The passport isn’t a stand-alone document for certain dependents if no date of entry into the United States is present. If you do not want to apply for a PTIN online, use Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number Application. First-time PTIN applicants can also apply for a PTIN online.
